Movin' Forward and Vibin' - Tha Proda-G
Tha Proda-G is a rapper and artist whose inspiration for music came from a surprising, yet sentimental place: a karaoke stage.
As a young boy, Tha Proda-G would watch his father sing karaoke. His father would choose older song selections that focused on lyrics containing truth; he was inspired by words that held value to others.
“Music has been a very big part of my life. I grew up old school. My parents were old school; life and music were about respect, humility, loyalty, and being a good person,” the artist smiled as he reflected on his childhood.
The rapper revealed that music inspired him to be able to express his feelings much easier than having a sit down 1-on-1 conversation. Tha Proda-G’s musical expression has taken him on a journey of inspiration, growth, and knowledge.
“With my music, I can speak my heart, my soul, and what I have to say in my own way,” he told me.
Tha Proda-G shared that he grew up with Chicano music and rap. His father was instrumental in teaching him how to make music sound good. Tha Proda-G’s dad would show him how to change his tone to hit the high and low notes when they would karaoke together.
The rappers and artists Tha Proda-G grew up listening to also inspired him. He was intrigued by the flows he was hearing in their songs.
“The songs inspired me to want my music to sound good, too. It’s not just gibberish being said in my music, it’s knowledge. It’s the advice I give to people that I have gained in my own life. It’s the expression of my feelings. I want people to understand through my music that they can choose the right things in their lives and be able to decide different ways of living,” he thoughtfully shared.
Tha Proda-G has been making his own music since the age of thirteen and used to be known as Lil Blue. The artist laughed fondly as he remembered his first stage name. He changed his name at his cousin’s suggestion, finding the alternate spelling creative and perfect. He has been Tha Proda-G since that day.
The artist is now in his late 20s, but it was at a young age that he started making meaningful music. As a teenager, he released his first song. The track was a powerful testimony and dedication to the loved ones he had lost. It became a prevention song to help those dealing with their stress and pain; an alternate way to heal.
“Being able to talk to people through my music and have people understand and click with the song is important. They understand there is more than partying and nonsense. The lyrics hit home, and hit hard for some people. With my music, I was always inspired to do that: to make music that hit home, for people to feel that emotion inside of them,” he shared. “We are doing something and I am feeling what they are saying; it really hits my heart.”
Tha Proda-G found inspiration in the artists Devour Up (one of his all-time favorite artists) and King Lil G. He started listening to the artists while he was in high school. He had the chance to see King Lil G as his first concert experience, which to this day, is still memorable.
“The King Lil G concert inspired me. I was just 13, a little kid, and I was in awe. I was watching him blow up in Twin Falls, Idaho at this little all ages bar. It was crazy to me. He was there; and here I was, watching him. Now he is a huge artist and made it big, and I remember seeing him in that little bar in Idaho,” he told me as he re-lived his memories. “It was insane.”
The rapper explained why Devour Up is one of his all-time favorite artists, telling me that Devour Up has an amazing flow.
“Devour Up: the way that he spits, his creative mind on how he just comes out with these different words that just POP! POP! POP! They catch your attention and grab you,” he said. “Everything Devour Up is saying is real stuff; that’s what drew me in because that is what I like to talk about as well: the real stuff.”
Tha Proda-G told me that both King Lil G and Devour Up have extremely motivational music and they are not afraid to speak about the raw, vulnerable issues. The rapper is drawn to these two artists because he reaches for the raw stuff in his music, as well.
“When you sit there, and you’re like: they really said that? Man, I felt that. I didn’t know that about life,” he told me. “Well, that’s what really gets a kick out of me because when I make my music, I like to build it that way. I want people to say: Man, he said that? Really? That’s amazing; it sounds good.”
The artist shared with me that his inspiration comes from many places and he is grateful for that. The people who have been around him, the people who motivated and pushed him to learn the way music should sound are vital to his journey. Those people push the artist to strive, do better, and to learn.
“I’m learning as I go. I come out with great tracks because of these motivations, these inspirations. My motto has always been: ‘Keep your head up, keep moving forward, and never look back.’ That has always been the thing that just kept me going; even if I gave up on music, I came back. I’m coming back stronger than ever,” he said with promise.
The rapper told me that this is how his music journey will continue: he will always come back stronger, each year. After listening to his track “Delusional,” (featuring artist M.I.G Numen) on YouTube, I believe him. There are two phrases in the song that struck me: “keeping the head and the chin up high” and “no need for the negativity.” I feel this perfectly describes the authentic artist I interviewed.
I was honored to receive an unreleased track that Tha Proda-G is currently recording. It starts with a melodic hook; a yearning question in its lyrics. The artist has a flow that can’t be ignored and is definitely playlist-worthy.
