J is for Joy: Meet The Joy 5ive

“We like to bring joy in all we do!"

The Joy 5ive is a musical band of five siblings that approach life with fun. The three sisters and two brothers have created an upbeat, joyful Valentine’s Day song that will have you boldly running to your crush to spill your feelings.

“It’s the song that you will want to jump around to, or blast in your car while cruising the 405,” said Loreyale, the second oldest member of the band.

‘Be Mine’ is a song that puts a light-hearted, approachable spin on the holiday of love, eliminating the often scary or awkward moments of asking someone to be your Valentine.

“It should be fun to tell someone you like them. What better way than asking someone to be your Valentine?” asked Josephine Joy, the vocalist. “We think sending this song to someone, or even texting someone the lyrics, can be a great way to break the ice.”

The band communicates through music, and it’s not surprising. The siblings, aged 10 to 21, grew up in the musical lifestyle. Their mother, Joy Orleans, is a professional vocalist, songwriter, and has led her own band. As each child approached her with their desire to learn her art, Joy taught them to sing, play instruments, and produce music. She enrolled them in dance and theater programs.

“We were always connected to the creative arts because of our mom,” explained Jhyroy, the bassist.

The siblings are a strong team. Mary told me that their talents will sometimes overlap and they share the same roles within the band. However, each band member brings a uniqueness to the group.

Josephine Joy, 10, is the youngest member. She sings, dances, is a gymnast, and a cheerleader. Mary said Josephine Joy is the life of the party.

Quyroy, 14, dances, acts, and plays the guitar extremely well. He loves the blues and is known as the cool guy of the group. Mary said that Quyroy brings the hip vibe to the band.

Jhyroy, 15, is the band leader, an actor, and plays the bass. Mary told me that Jhyroy is a great dramatic actor, and brings that characteristic to the forefront. His ability to lead keeps the band animated and excited.

“He’s a great leader. He’s not the oldest, but he has the oldest energy,” said Mary. “We look to him to see where the song is going. He is the glue that holds the band together.”

Loreyale, 17, is the other lead vocalist. She sings, dances, and is the choreographer. Mary said Loreyale is jolly, sweet, and gives the best hugs.

“She is upbeat and can turn any situation around to the positive. Loreyale is bright and warm-spirited. If we were all in the sky, she would be the sun.”

Mary, the oldest member of the band, is 21, and plays the technical role. She is lovingly called ‘Mary the Dictionary’ because she loves to gain knowledge in many subjects. She studied music theory, composition, and music production.

“I like the technical side of music; I guess you could call me the brains of the operation,” Mary said. “If we were in a heist movie, I would be the person behind the computer screen hacking away.”

Speaking of movies, a new flick is a great idea for your Valentine’s Day date. The drive to the theater is even better; it’s the perfect opportunity to listen to The Joy 5ive’s new Valentine song, “Be Mine’ on repeat. Go ahead and blast it; even on the 405.
